Safety

Nano-sized particles, devices and composites have significantly different properties and effects than larger sizes of similar materials. As a result, products that take advantage of advances in nanotechnology may pose different safety risks.

The Government of Canada regulates the manufacture and importation of nanotechnology-based products to ensure that they are safe to consumers, safe to the environment, and safe to workers that produce and handle them. Various federal departments and agencies perform this oversight function--depending on the product.

Health Canada and Environment Canada in collaboration with the international community including the United States, European Union and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, are investing in nanomaterial health and safety research to keep pace with advances in nanotechnology.
